The PRV240 proving unit generates a known AC voltage output (240V) that the Fluke 117 DMM can read to confirm the meter is functioning correctly before the dead-circuit test. If the 117 shows 240V on the PRV240, the meter is confirmed working; the electrician tests the isolated circuit (reads zero); and then immediately proves the 117 again on the PRV240 to confirm the meter still works after the test.
